This book outlines the work of Plasma studio, from the cultural elements tied to landform, to the parametric development of the projects, to the very organization of the studio. The topological geometries of the interior of the Hotel Puerta America; the advanced conceptualization of landform architecture; the approach to the complex design synthesis of landscape urbanism at the great Flowing Gardens in Xi’an are a demonstration of how digital experimentation is a crucial weapon today.
The author explores the intersections between digital philosophy, emerging technologies, and architecture and offers the reader the first complete critical and theoretical analysis of the work of Plasma studio.

This book dedicated to François Roche and his group, raises questions of great importance for the development of architecture. What role can new material technologies have in a process in which the same materials have incorporated growing shares of active behaviors? For example, will they be self-cleaning, un-polluting, self-changing? To what extent will the various components of the buildings be increasingly “interconnected” and able to simulate processes typical of living systems, such as transpiration, dilation, growth, life, and death? Can we begin to speak of living “systems” in architecture?

Moving Layers
Contextual Video in Art and Architecture

Moving Layers: Contextual Video in Art and Architecture explores the stratified language of the electronic image and its ability to redefine architectonic space, giving it new meaning. From the prehistory and genetics of Video Art to the origins of video installations, site specific installations, interactive environments and Public Video Art, all the way to the applications of advanced technology in the new media. This is an artistic study of the elasticity of video surfaces, of the possibility of rethinking and re-dimensioning the experience of space through the use of images in motion.

Shop | Works

This book shows the activity of SHoP Architects as an emblematic example of the research area, the applications and the growing success of a contemporary American office focused on digital technologies for design and construction. What is peculiar of SHoP is the openness to all the different actors of the building process. An intense experimental intention is found in the works of the office, all embedded in a fully contemporary aesthetic dimension, focused on vibration and variation of building components. And the beauty of buildings is much more relevant since it is strictly connected to all pragmatic and technological aspects of architectural practice, and to the search for new paths of invention.

Hovering between virtual backdrops and real spaces? Architecture and the world of electronic games.

The architectural awareness and experience of space, and the creative use can profit greatly from certain aspects of "games" and the related technology. Here the author investigates a fascinating contribution of avant-garde art to the construction of space in the field of electronic games and arcades, beginning with New Babylon, moving through the radical suggestions of the 1960s and 1970s to the commercial and experimental examples of contemporary amusement arcades. Also considered are the virtual worlds of video games which are growing increasingly complex. The book reveals in a critical yet impressive way how important the element of "play" has become in today's digital architectonic designs.

The Italian architect Alberto Iacovoni is one of the founding members of the Studio maO which specializes on architecture and media. He is also a member of the office for urban art laboratory, Stalker.

The young digital architects of the Mediterranean countries leave the legacy of classical architecture and move on to radical new beginnings.
Following on from the successful book "Natural Born CAADesigners: Young American Architects", this book takes a look at the most recent architectonic developments in the Mediterranean countries, where architects have up to now been strongly influenced by the archaeologically significant environment and their classical architectural inheritance. How do young architects in Italy, France, Spain and Greece react to the new digital age? The electronic tools give them the chance to free themselves from the burden of tradition, to explore fascinating opportunities in their architecture. This book provides a colourful and concise overview of their work, using previously unpublished material.

The team IAN+ was formed in 1997 in Rome by Carmelo Baglivo, Luca Galofaro and Stefania Manna.

Zaha Hadid's architecture has become increasingly expressive and imaginative as a result of the IT Revolution. Here an overview. Even in her very early work, Zaha Hadid made innovative use of graphic techniques such as penetration, distortion, curvature, strongly reduced perspectives, to portray her architectural designs from a refreshing new angle. In this way her unmistakeable concepts of architectural space originated, and it is no surprise that the London architect makes full use of the full range of possibilities afforded by today's electronic design tools to create her inimitable forms.

This present publication documents the most important of her recent projects, revealing how Zaha Hadid has risen to the digital challenge. Patrik Schumacher teaches at the Architectural Association in London.

How the latest forms of mathematics help us shape the space around us ? the fascinating story of a radical transformation. The latest book in our successful series IT Revolution in Architecture provides a concise summary of how our perception of the space around us has radically changed in recent years. We could even go as far as to say that we ourselves shape the space around us according to how our perceptions of the universe alter and develop, and mathematics plays a pivotal role. In this book, the "virtual" protagonist of the journey through the concept of space is the square.

Michele Emmer, born in 1945, is Professor of Mathematics at the University La Sapienza in Rome and has authored many books and films on the subject of mathematics and art and culture. He was also responsible for exhibitions at the Venetian Biennale and the Cité des Sciences La Villette in Paris.

With hyperbodies, designing buildings becomes a game with architects as the programmers!

Hyperbodies are buildings and environments which can continuously change shape and content. The mutations of such buildings depend on the input coming from their user as well as from the surroundings. This interaction between user and building is determined by a data flow which the hyperbody uses and converts into a "hypersurface" structure, which then alters our perception of space in and around the hyperbody. The architect programs this interaction and can thereby define the specific character of the building. In this book, the author provides a concise overview of this latest digital tool.

Kas Oosterhuis is Professor at the Technical University Delft and is a well-known Dutch architect.

How is architecture being changed by technology? Here an astute and discerning response revealing both the possibilities and the hazards. The changes which Information Technology has brought to all areas of our lives have been dramatic. Even in architecture it´s influence has been far-reaching, creating new processes opening up exciting new prospects. In this book, Peter Eisenman, Derrick de Kerckhove and Antonino Saggio write boldly on the challenges which now face young architects. The IT Revolution offers opportunities which were previously undreamt of, but at the same time, danger lurks in the realm of virtuality with its implication of unlimited possibilities.

Furio Barzon uses examples from contemporary architecture to underscore the three text contributions and also places them in the context of state of the art technology and future developments.
Eisenman along with Gehry is one of the USA´s most important living architects; de Kerckhove heads the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology in Toronto; Saggio is Professor in Rome and editor of the series IT Revolution in Architecture.
